{"id":341,"date":"2012-08-23T04:50:12","date_gmt":"2012-08-23T08:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ehscsi.com\/?p=341"},"modified":"2017-12-10T23:21:23","modified_gmt":"2017-12-11T04:21:23","slug":"how-do-you-keep-track-of-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ehscsi.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/23\/how-do-you-keep-track-of-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Identify and Keep Track of Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.ehscsi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/training-cartoon.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-344\" title=\"training cartoon\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.ehscsi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/training-cartoon.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ehscsi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/training-cartoon.jpeg 224w, https:\/\/www.ehscsi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/training-cartoon-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a>Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) compliance typically includes the regulatory requirements from OSHA, EPA and DOT but also includes state and local requirements unique to those jurisdictions. \u00a0In many instances each agency requires training specific to its regulations. \u00a0It can be a difficult and daunting task to keep up with the training required by each of the agencies, considering the number of EHS regulations. \u00a0Many companies adopt a web-based Learning Management System (LMS) while others do not have <!--more-->the capital to do so.\u00a0\u00a0 Whether managing training electronically or manually, identifying the required trainings and the population to which the training should be administered is the key component to success of the program.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I recently created a training matrix for a client; in it I identified over 20 unique EHS trainings required for the employees and contractors at the facility.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I began with the required trainings for each of the aforementioned regulatory agencies and detailed them in the matrix.\u00a0\u00a0 The matrix not only included the name of the training and the regulatory citation, but also the required contents of the training, the administration frequency and the site documentation that referenced the requirements.\u00a0\u00a0 This type of matrix is a great foundation for a training program and ensures continuity in the event of personnel turnover. \u00a0 It provides a central location in which all training requirements are detailed. \u00a0 The matrix can be used a tool to engage executives and managers in EHS.\u00a0 When these stakeholders understand the requirements and risks associated with the activities in which their employees engage commitment and engagement&#8211;two key elements in creating a sustainable EHS program&#8211;are more easily obtained.\u00a0 While training is a foundational element of successful EHS programs it should not simply meet a regulatory requirement but result in employee competence.\u00a0 In a <a title=\"Help EHSCSI:  How Do I Keep Employees Engaged in Environmental, Health &amp;
