{"id":644,"date":"2012-11-09T02:00:07","date_gmt":"2012-11-09T07:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ehscsi.com\/?p=644"},"modified":"2019-10-11T18:16:54","modified_gmt":"2019-10-11T22:16:54","slug":"feedback-a-key-to-a-great-ehs-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ehscsi.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/09\/feedback-a-key-to-a-great-ehs-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Feedback:  A Key to a Great EHS Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.ehscsi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Feedback.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-648\" title=\"Feedback\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.ehscsi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Feedback.jpeg\" alt=\"EHS Programs, EHS Consultant in South Florida\" width=\"239\" height=\"211\"><\/a>Last week I had the privilege of attending the <a title=\"American Society of Safety Engineers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.asse.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Society of Safety Engineers<\/a> Leadership Symposium \u201cSafety is about Leadership.\u201d&nbsp; I had the opportunity to meet leaders in the industries of Organizational Development and Environmental, Health &amp; Safety (EHS) Management.&nbsp; I attended multiple sessions about how leadership principles impact the management of an EHS program.&nbsp; One session that really stood out to me was on feedback \u201cThe Leadership Key to Improvement\u201d by <a title=\"Dr. Katherine Hart LinkedIn Profiles\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/profile\/view?id=4985300&amp;authType=NAME_SEARCH&amp;authToken=nXrv&amp;locale=en_US&amp;srchid=58925736-728a-458c-8e5c-ca7e2fc0c9d4-0&amp;srchindex=1&amp;srchtotal=730&amp;goback=%2Efps_PBCK_kathy+hart_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*2_*1_Y_*1_*1_*1_false_1_R_*1_*51_*1_*51_true_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2&amp;pvs=ps&amp;trk=pp_profile_name_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Kathy Hart<\/a> of <a title=\"Clear Vision Consulting\" href=\"http:\/\/clearvisionconsult.com\/home\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clear Vision Consulting<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; Dr. Hart spoke about giving and receiving feedback and that both are avenues through which we can improve management of our programs.&nbsp; One principle that stood out to me was that \u201cfeedback is data&#8211;it is neither negative or positive\u201d&nbsp;and is about \u201casking the right questions, the right way, to solicit sound and current data about an act or actions that have been undertaken.\u201d&nbsp; She pointed to the importance of understanding the source of the feedback and the need to ensure that it is from the appropriate level of an organization\u2014the entire organization, a group or department within the organization or individuals.&nbsp; She also gave examples of how to solicit feedback and highlighted the importance of not only the results but also their proper interpretation&#8211;this is the greatest benefit of feedback and <em>the key<\/em> to moving any program forward.&nbsp; This really resonated with me because as a former onsite EHS professional and now EHS consultant, I understand the ease of getting lost in the daily grind&nbsp;and this presentation reminded me of the criticality of (1) asking our internal and external customers whether we are moving in the right direction with our programs and (2) determining&nbsp;that the programs are yielding their intended results.&nbsp;&nbsp;Dr. Hart presented the following examples of ways in which to solicit feedback:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Surveys<\/li>\n<li>Focus Groups<\/li>\n<li>1 on 1 Interviews<\/li>\n<li>Dot Voting<\/li>\n<li>Multi-Voting<\/li>\n<li>Hi-Lo<\/li>\n<li>Plus\/Delta<\/li>\n<li>Gradients of Agreement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, Dr. Hart touched on the importance of asking good questions. &nbsp;Questions that are open-ended or inquiry-based are those that facilitate information gathering and provide one of the best mechanisms for feedback solicitation.<\/p>\n<p>Have you used any of the above to solicit feedback?&nbsp; If yes, how did it work for you and how did you apply it?&nbsp; If not, what methods have you found successful in soliciting feedback?
